Managing Pre-Harvest
Although we controlled pests at the earliest stage of planting, high-level maintenance is desirable for a good harvest collection. Pests infect plants with certain toxins that pest controls may not be able to address. In turn, it may affect crop yield or quality or even become poisonous for human consumption. For instance, pests may lead to mycotoxins’ production in farm produce or products, which has been traced as the major causes of certain diseases in humans and animals.
The significant foods affected by this toxin are rice, millet, maise, wheat, soybean, groundnut, and sorghum. Mycotoxin infestation is related to three groups of Mycotoxigenic fungi which are Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium. Hence, there has always been an observation for contaminants in foods, and specific regulations are sometimes put in place to ensure their eradication.
The first probiotic designs in respect of pre-harvest management are known as AGRISAN and AGRISAN PRO.
AGRISAN is formulated from a mixture of Australian soil and bacteria found in water for protecting plants from diseases caused by fungi and bacteria. It is safe to use for all kinds of plants and suitable for any soil, fruits, and vegetables. It primarily protects them from moulds and Mycotoxigenic fungi (Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium).
AGRISAN PRO is the first probiotic formulated as an antioxidant and for extending the period of pre-harvest ripening. It is of great advantage to farmers who struggle and suffer majorly from pre-harvest problems. More so, it is cost-effective (it does not involve expensive labour cost), helps create a market entry point at a later date, and ensures organic certification during disease control. That is, it is organically formulated.
AGRISAN and AGRISAN PRO are also sold in markets as fertilisers. Essentially, they improve plant growth, prevent or kill diseases caused by pests and perform antioxidant functions. The characteristics and advantages of both probiotics are:
It Is Not Artificially Formulated
It is a mixture of organic compounds and encourages the organic cleansing of crops before the harvest stage.
It Is User Friendly
This feature is because the probiotic is safe and non-toxic. Also, the process is not complicated, as it only involves the same method as irrigation.
It Is Harmless
Therefore, it does not contain harmful chemicals and creates a safe space for plants, animals, and other living organisms.
It Is Compatible with the Organic Method of Agriculture
It is not formulated to serve any form of agriculture. Thus, it is compatible with the organic and standard form of agriculture.
It Is A Safe On-Farm Produce
As a probiotic, it is usually applied through spraying but does not require washing before harvesting or packaging.
Easy Method Application
It is better sprayed on infested plants or commodities. However, where the pest is still in larva form and not fully grown, it is destroyed through fertigation.
It Increases the Chances of an Abundant Harvest
There is a higher probability that the harvest will yield sound and expected results because plants are healed from diseases that may have affected their growth or reproduction. The significant difference between the AGRISAN and AGRISAN PRO is that the latter complements the former and also enables farmers to harvest at the right time.
